The california department of public health covid-19 data processing and informatics section is seeking an epidemiologist to join an exciting team developing innovative solutions to strengthen cdph’s public health data ecosystemThe ideal incumbent is an experienced research professional with a strong understanding of the informatics challenges of both public health and health care delivery systems and is ready to find solutions to ensure critical data access necessary to support equitable public health policy and practice.
The epidemiologist should have an in-depth understanding of statistical analyses, data pipelines, and programming techniques, ideally fluent in programming languages such as python, r , or sql, or other tools used for data manipulation and visualizationThe epidemiologist will work at the intersection of infectious diseases (particularly but not limited to covid-19) and socioeconomic indicators of health, developing forward-thinking strategies for enhancing data collection to inform department-wide health equity objectivesCompetitive candidates should also be excellent communicators with an ability to explain their work to both technical and non-technical audiencesPrior relevant work with clinical data, and/or electronic health record, is favorable but not required.
Note: we offer remote work option with full benefits even this is 1 year contract.

Bachelor`s degree in public health or computer science, health informatics and 3 years’ experience or equivalent experience / training.
Thorough knowledge of relevant clinical or public health data systems, and of the highly-complex concepts, principles, policies, methodologies, techniques, best practices, regulations, and standards practices involved with health systems, health analytics, public health surveillance or electronic medical data management.
Strong skills associated with statistical analysis and data systems programming (r, python, or sql preferred).
Experience with evaluating,implementing, or interpreting deterministic or probabilistic matching algorithms.
Experience with electronic health records, administrative, or medical claim data.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions, collect and analyze system performance data, and produce substantive reports and analyses.
Strong interest in working with health care data and understanding the challenges that face complex health care delivery systems.
Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
Detail oriented, with proven ability to effectively manage time, see projects through to completion, organize competing priorities, and effectively address complex, urgent issues as they arise.
Advanced interpersonal communications skills, to convey highly technical information and instructions to all levels of clinical users in a clear and concise manner, to provide technical support, and to develop and deliver training materials as needed.
Master’s degree in public health (epidemiology/biostatistics), health informatics, computer science or related field and 2 years’ experience or equivalent experience/training.
Prior experience with electronic healthcare data systems, in particular epic-derived healthcare data.
Understanding of social determinants of health and health equity principles
Experience in applying concepts of social determinants of health to data analyses.
Understanding of interoperability standards such as health level seven international (hl7) v2.x, v3, ihe profile, clinical document architecture (cda) and/or fast healthcare interoperability resources (fhir).
Experience writing reproducible, modular code that can be generalized for various use cases and working in collaborative coding environments, such as github.
