Primary responsibilities:
This job is ideal for someone who has recently earned a doctorate in a health-related field, is eager to apply their research and/or clinical mindset to real-world healthcare problems, and enjoys the rigorous process of creating, developing, testing, and scaling innovative ideas that transform the field of metabolic healthThe senior research scientist works under the direction of the metabolic health research fellow in the research & clinical arm of optum labsWhile the research fellow is primarily responsible for the overall strategy, design, and management of the research, the senior research scientist supports and facilitates day-to-day activities to make progress on strategic research objectives, primarily related to type 2 diabetes and obesityThis includes activities that support the delivery of internal whitepapers, academic publications, investment recommendations, retrospective analyses, program evaluations, and prospective studies and pilotsAudiences for these deliverables are both internal- and external-facing, ranging from business executives to clinical subject matter experts to collaboration partners in start-up, pharmaceutical industry, and academic research environments
Identify emerging opportunities relevant to the prevention, treatment, and care delivery for people with type 2 diabetes or obesity, with an emphasis on virtual care model design, treatment matching and stratification, and real-world evidence generation; stay current with developments in these fields and their implications on the healthcare landscape
Use this knowledge to help develop evidence-based arguments for investments in relevant research projects, products, or partnership opportunities
Cultivate and provide subject-matter expertise to your teammates and to teams working on intersecting healthcare topics
Dive into the relevant literature with a critical eye, incorporate data from multiple sources, and synthesize literature reviews and internal position papers based on your findings
Do quick-turnaround background research to support research & clinical leaders in preparation for activities ranging from partner meetings to the crafting of rigorous research proposals
Offer creative and strategic thinking about research plans, projects, partnerships, and opportunities for investment
Collaborate to support the design and execution of research projects with cross-disciplinary teams (statisticians, data analysts, clinicians, researchers, business development, product managers, and more), such as providing support to:
Principal investigators during development of research proposals, study protocols, and ohra/irb interactions
Data scientists and analysts in the analysis and interpretation of data
Clinical operations on the participant experience and study logistics
Research & clinical leaders to communicate study rationale and results to diverse audiences
Product and business leaders to scope challenges and opportunities to improve customer experiences
Build relationships with people in the company, your field, and the healthcare system at large
Mentor and be mentored by other researchers, clinicians, and colleagues
Track progress toward team research goals and on major team projects; create quick-turnaround reports on progress as requested

Required qualifications:
Doctoral degree with applications to healthcare, including phd, pharmd, md, or other relevant expertise
Demonstrated ability to synthesize research and clinical content for a diverse audience
Multiple publications in a variety of forums
Preferred qualifications:
Experience with startups or similarly dynamic environments
Experience writing and submitting study protocols to irbs
Experience with projects using real-world healthcare data or relational databases
Experience with innovative care model design and evaluation
Hands-on experience with sql, r, or python
