Duties
This series covers positions managing, supervising, leading, and/or performing professional and scientific work.
Vacancies filled under this public notice may have varying levels of promotion potential and supervisory level, if any.

As a mechanical engineer you will:
As an authority in engineering, incumbent is sought out by high levels of management and other experts for advice and consultation in rapidly evolving engineering field.
Ensure that the latest state-of-the-art technology is infused into doe projects.
Evaluate programs for progress against established goals and to identify potential problems and initiate, or recommend, as appropriate, corrective or preventive actions to avoid or minimize problems.
Identify deficiencies and opportunities for improvement and, where appropriate, specifies requisite corrective actions.
Present findings to senior management officials both within and outside of doe contractor management and negotiate an appropriate solution, consistent with often conflicting technical, policy, resource and programmatic constraints.
Review and modify organizational budget submissions and justifies resource requirements to senior department management.
Review and comment on a variety of engineering and scientific related documents.
Generate technical reports, analyses, and recommendations.

Analyze technical engineering issues, requirements and development efforts in order to resolve major conflicts, unique issues and to address engineering uncertainties.
Collaborating in the formulation of new standards, concepts, and theories that change existing knowledge and promote knowledge.
Developing innovative recommendations that advance engineering programs and/or enhance operating programs within the organization.

Evaluating engineering programs and/or project needs in order to prepare documentation (i.e., budget, procurement, sows, etc.) to support organizational needs.

Serving as an authoritative consultant to top level management officials and to a broad consortium of engineering experts outside of the organization.
Providing guidance for technically complex engineering systems, projects and/or programs designed to resolve challenging engineering management problems.
Evaluating technical maturity and risk associated with various technology alternatives designed to address complex engineering problemsAnd develops and recommends alternatives to mitigate those risks.

Basic requirement
Degree: engineeringTo be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor`s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by abet; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

Combination of education and experience - college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineeringThe adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
