Job summary
We’re looking for a graphic artist with the skills to produce compelling visual content for the philadelphia inquirer, both for our website, inquirer.com, and for the print editions of the philadelphia inquirer and philadelphia daily news.
Your primary responsibility will be to create engaging graphicsThe successful candidate needs to be comfortable working under the tight deadlines of breaking news and have the stamina and discipline to work on complex long-term enterprise projects.
This job requires a unique mixture of wide-ranging skillsYou will need to possess both strong artistic capabilities and deep analytical skills, expertise in cartography and typography,
Knowledge of best practices for both ux design and print reproduction, and possess the storytelling skills of a journalist and the keen eye of a designer.
You will report directly to the graphics editor, but you will work closely with every desk in the newsroom, so having exceptional collaborative and communication skills is mandatory.
What you`ll do
Create breaking-news information graphics on deadline for web and print
Create deeply researched enterprise graphics for major projects, and be comfortable in working on both short- and long-term projects
Concurrently
Ensure that your graphics are optimized for proper display on desktop and mobile devices, as well as for print
Render diagrams for news graphics, for everything from how a fatal house fire occurred to the knee injury of a local athlete
Analyze data using spreadsheet, database, and gis software, and visualize the results of your analysis to help reporters with their stories and
Inform our readers
Assist reporters with data visualizations they create using embeddable data-viz tools
Who we’re looking for
Strong artistic capabilities, including experience with diagrammatic rendering and illustration
Expertise with adobe’s illustrator, photoshop, and indesign programsExperience with animation and 3-d modeling software is a plus
Knowledge of current best practices for responsive web design, including command of html, css, and javascript
Experience with creating online data visualizations using open-source software and off-the-shelf tools
Experience with best practices for print design, including color management and typography
Cartographic skills, with experience using analytical gis software such as arcmap or qgis
Data-analysis skills, including expertise with excel and database programs such as access, sql, or r
A passion for visual storytelling and a commitment to our core journalism tenets of accuracy, fairness, and diversity
