The resource assessment engineering manager will direct a team of development engineers responsible for the design and engineering of utility scale solar pv and energy storage projects in early and mid-stage developmentResponsibilities include engineering management, developing standards and processes, design reviews, energy models, equipment specifications and design calculations to support epc pricing estimates, rfp submittals, permitting applications, design drafting, and due diligence on greenfield and m&a project sites.
Designs will be developed, optimized, analyzed and reviewed utilizing pvsyst, autocad, sundat, civil 3d, gis, excel, among other toolsThe position will be responsible for direct management of ~4-8 development engineers and will require management skills such as goal setting and evaluation, team budgeting, training and mentorshipThe successful candidate will be expected to prioritize complex relationships between multiple projects, report status to the director of development engineering, and work independently with remote teamsExcellent communication, task management and planning skills needed, in addition to technical breadth.
The position is in louisville, co / san francisco, ca or salt lake city, ut and may include up to 25% travel to project locations and partner offices, including international travel.
Key responsibilities
Project development
Greenfield
Initial project evaluation and siting
Create constraints maps and define buildable areas
Pv and bess preliminary design and associated energy production estimates
Complete system design calculations
Design for select projects up to 60% electrical, civil, structural, and mechanical
Comply with local and national safety codes and standards
Equipment selection and specification
Work on system design optimization for top-tier performances and operations
De-risk projects through defining project flaws and identifying critical path design tasks
Create interconnection design documents and drawings
M&a
Engineering due diligence matrix and risk assessment
Full project design evaluation to identify red flags and fatal flows
Redesign and update layouts, energy production estimates, epc cost estimates, equipment selections
Coordinate with m&a developer to complete necessary rfp response documentation
Design for select projects up to 60% electrical, civil, structural, and mechanical
Pre-construction
Provide epc cost estimating to support all stages and milestones throughout the development process
Coordinate with procurement team on owner-furnished equipment (ofe) pricing and availability
Coordinate with execution project engineering and construction teams to capture lessons learned and actual cost to construct
Coordinate with operations and m&a teams to capture lessons learned and actual system losses
Research and understand trends, legislation, market changes affecting epc costs
Facilitate epc rfp process
Engineering support
Review recent technology and companies for approved vendor list inclusion
Pv and bess system design optimization to maximize reliability and reduce cost
Collaborate with asset management team to troubleshoot existing systems or develop repair and remediation plans
Growth and leadership
Manage task load and new project assignments for a team of development engineers
Develop inter-engineering processes for sharing of information and best practices amongst the team
Manage relationships with 3rd party engineering consultants and firms utilized by the team
Mentor and train team on changing trends in technology, best practices and safety
Develop and improve engineering processes for the development of safe, quality and high-performance projects
Participate in aes clean energy’s growth planning process by contributing to process improvement task forces and other strategic planning activities
Primary qualifications
Undergraduate degree in engineering or equivalent technical field; graduate degree preferred
8+ years professional experience in solar pv system design, development, construction and analysis preferred
Proficiency in real-world pv system design, including 1-line and 3-line diagram conventions, nec design requirements, overcurrent protection sizing, utility disconnecting means requirements, equipment selection, grounding methodologies and short circuit current analysis
Experience with medium voltage design
Effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work in a team environment
Proficient with ms office suite

Graduate degree in engineering
Pe license
Pmp certification
Nabcep pv installation professional certification
2-5 years of experience with battery energy storage systems design and modeling
Experience with matlab, etap, skm and other advanced modeling tools
Substation/hv design experience
Spanish language skills
Osha 10-hr or comparable job-site safety certification
