Required education and experience:
Bachelor`s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Two years of software applications developer experience.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Skills using linux, perl, c++ and c .
Ability to push, pull, and/or move medium weighted objects.
Ability to work at sea and take part in oceanographic cruises.
Gerg operates a number of unmanned surface vehicles and autonomous buoyancy gliders.
Gerg operates several varieties of ocean observing buoy systems.
Some travel may be required.
Preferred education and experience:
Master’s degree in computer science or computer engineering.
Experience interfacing sensors to single board computers.
Experience programming sensor operations through linux.
Preferred licenses and certifications:
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Some electronics engineering and interfacing skills.
Familiarity with telemetry systems.
Preferred other factors:
Ability to work at sea.
Writing and maintaining applications software: writes, maintains, and improves software, pertaining to ocean observing buoy systemsIn consultation with the supervisor, verifies preliminary design and output, and recommends technical and procedural design for new or revised applications including flow charts, system specifications, programming guidelines, and code reviewDevelops new software to operate ocean observing platforms including buoy systems, autonomous vehicles and othersAssists with testing of complex programs, program modifications, or applicationsConfers with the supervisor to define application requirements.
Collaboration: works with electronics technicians to interface sensor systems with embedded computers using various communication protocols (rs232, 485,422,i2c etc.).
Drivers: writes drivers as required.
Improvements: helps maintain and improve the software on existing platforms.
Troubleshoot/problem solve: trouble shoots software/hardware issuesResolves problems by reviewing and analyzing software documentation and production outputs to identify causes, solutions, and make appropriate referrals.
Modifications and customer support: responds to the needs of the project as outlined by the supervisor and project teamAnswers questions and provides technical assistance and training to application usersModifies existing operational software as neededWrites documentation of system procedures and guidelines for application users as well as for programs and program modifications.
Software development: performs occasional software development or software upgrades depending on the project, pertaining to unmanned surface vehicles and autonomous buoyancy gliders.
Performs other duties as assigned.
