Note: this role affords the flexibility for an employee to split their work time between the stLouis spectrum brands office and a dedicated home office.
The senior research chemist leads the development and testing of cleaners for our rejuvenate line of productsThis key role will be responsible for developing and validating rejuvenate formulas, refining or modifying existing testing, and understanding and establishing industry standardsIt will also provide technical support for claims substantiation and product demonstrationsResponsibilities will be especially focused on floor cleaners for wood, vinyl, stone, tile, and laminate.
Primary duties & responsibilities
Serve as the application expert working collaboratively to drive the product line development strategy, based on market needs and technical capabilities
Plan and generate data and protocols to support current products and new product development
Coordinate chemical and physical property studies at external labs to generate data needed for global products and registrations
Develop industry test methods and standards in maintaining and restoring wood flooring, synthetic flooring and concrete flooring
Evaluate new and existing specialty chemicals and polymers for suitability in development projects
Interface with other departments such as manufacturing, supply chain, sales, marketing and sourcing
Serves as a resource and develop technical information for product development on product concepts, labeling claims
Prepare technical reports and other promotional materials to highlight the benefits of cleaning formulas and functional chemicals
Communicate effectively within a multi-functional team
Build strong partnerships both internally and externally
Guide and mentor junior team member`s activities as assigned
Model the spectrum brands core values: accountability, trust and collaboration
Understand and demonstrate safe work practices to ensure a safe work environment
Comply with all company policies and procedures
Education and experience profile
Bachelor’s degree, chemistry or a science related field preferred with 5+ years of experience in formulation development and testing or
Master’s degree, chemistry or a science related field preferred with 3+ years of experience in formulation development and testing
Related industry experience preferably in floor care formulations / cleaning industry
Experience with product development from bench to commercialization
Experience with procedures, concepts and principles within product development, formulations, cleaning chemistry, and design of experiments
Strong understanding of principles of formulation development and testing.
High level of organizational skills.
Knowledge of basic laboratory operations and safety requirements.
Ability to operate standard laboratory equipment.
Pc skills (spreadsheet, word processing, presentations).
Able to work effectively in a highly cross-functional team and with internal and external resources
Strong written and verbal communication skills including effective presentation skills, one-on-one communication, and report writing
Ability to manage projects with little supervision.
Ability to manage up to 3 direct reports.
65-75% normal office environment and 25-35% laboratory environment
