Southern new hampshire university is currently seeking a sql database engineer to join our application operations team within information technology solutionsThe sql database engineer is part of an operations team responsible for the availability and performance of the sql estate across the universityThe sql database engineer will collaborate with multiple departments to meet organizational needsThe candidate must be self-motivated and possess strong analytical and communication skillsKey focus areas of the role are database operations focusing on both performance and process improvement, and process and environment documentationThe successful candidate will have the willingness and drive to learn and work in a transformational environment.
Essential duties and responsibilities of this position include:
Manage ticket and request queue
Respond to escalations by off-shore team
Management of sql environments including but not limited to:
Providing technical recommendations on system optimization, tuning, upgrades, and enhancements to include database hardware, software and storage capability.
Work with sql replication that includes always on availability groups
Assist with blocking and deadlock resolution and remediation.
Review, tune and suggest improvements on existing indexes as well as potential new indexes
Resource and storage capacity management
Install, and configure sql server
Investigate and remediate failed sql server jobs
Maintain the security, integrity, and performance of databases and environments including but not limited to access controls, securing data gateways, tuning indexes and queries
Maintain and look for improvements to database security strategies that provide the appropriate level of security for users and applications
Analyze system and database performance including but not limited to vmware, windows and sql server
Build documentation on the sql server environment and identify areas for sop creation and automation
Maintain and look for improvements to database backup and restoration strategies
Stay current on the latest technology trends to provide insight into strategic and tactical decisions
Work closely with other teams to operationalize support for azure services such as but not limited to azure sql database, and cosmos db
Work closely with systems and development teams to provide technical expertise
Participate in on-call rotation

2 + years of experience in microsoft sql platforms
2 + years ms sql server administration
2 + years performance tuning and optimization, using monitoring and troubleshooting tools
Bachelor’s degree(s) or experience in lieu of degree acceptable
Eager to learn new technologies and take ownership for technical projects
Ability to demonstrate creative thinking, advanced problem solving and troubleshooting
Ability to analyze and solve complex technical problems
Excellent communication skills
Self-starter with a willingness to learning azure platforms and cloud offerings (machine learning, data factory, paas, iaas, data lake, data catalog, key vault, nsg, application insights, oms, containers, storage accounts, gateways, geo replication, aad, recovery services and cost management)
Flexible, team player, 'get-it-done' personality
Ability to demonstrate a proactive approach to database administration
Ability to organize and plan work independently
Experience as a dba in an itil environment
Experience with microsoft bi gateway, ssrs\ssis\ssas and redgate sqlmonitor
Experience with microsoft azure database offerings
Experience supporting sql server environments in a devops process
Experience in provisioning, administering & troubleshooting services on the azure platform
Experience administrating mysql
Experience with automation platforms (powershell, python, r server, sql, cli, json)
Typically monday through friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm with flexibility to meet business demands as needed.
