Overview: licensed to the board of trustees of san diego state university, kpbs serves a countywide audience with news, information, cultural, entertainment, arts, and educational programmingThe kpbs programming department is responsible for creating memorable audience experiences across multiple platformsKpbs programming produces, acquires, schedules and releases audio and video content, which extends the public media brand and attracts large audiences who will become members of the station.
With direction from the kpbs director of programming and under the supervision of the kpbs operations manager, the kpbs technical producer/sound designer helps define the sound of kpbs audio products and helps produce the highest quality audio content for broadcast and downloadThe technical producer/sound designer plays a critical role in shaping the sound and presentation of the kpbs arts and culture podcast, port of entryWorking collaboratively with the podcast producer/coordinator, the technical producer/sound designer will have creative input throughout the audio production process, ensuring high quality studio and field recordings, tracking host sessions, studio interviews, and editing and final-mixing a complete and professional-level productThis role requires an ear for scoring and pacing in audio storytelling and meticulous attention to detailThe technical producer/sound designer will be responsible for the quality control and final post-production on episodes of only hereHe/she will also oversee the final mixes and audio best practices of additional kpbs and explore podcast/audio content and assist in the coordination of the podcast platformThey will also occasionally serve as fill-in technical director on other local kpbs productions.
This position is covered under the sag-aftra collective bargaining agreement with kpbsResponsibilities: audio recording/post production (80%):
Supervise host tracking sessions
Produce, ingest, and upload episode promos
Record subject interviews or other ambient audio both in studio and in the field
Repair distorted and/or noisy audio with audio production plugins
Collaborate with producers on music selection and acquisition
Score podcast episodes with artfully crafted transitions and sound design
Execute final mix of podcast episodes to podcast and/or broadcast loudness standards
Train and assist audio producers on editing and mixing best practices
Keep abreast of new industry products, technical parameters, production standards, and best practices
Podcast platform/explore content coordination (10%):
Assist the podcast producer/ coordinator in the production of local podcasts plus coordinating the workflow of the kpbs podcast stable including, but not limited to deliverables, promotions, underwriting, paperwork and data analysis.
Technical director/operations ( 10%):
The kpbs technical producer/sound designer will act as fill-in technical director for local radio productions programs as assigned, and may also be asked to work as part of the productions services team to operate equipment for local content and other productions as assignedProduction services oversees operation of the kpbs studios, which include television and radio studios, plus editing and post-production suitesOther audio assignments could include isdn sessions, pledge programs, live events, and other outside programs as assigned.
Work hours: the technical producer/sound designer shift runs from 9:00 am to 5:30pm 40 hours per week monday through fridayQualifications: knowledge and abilities
Expert proficiency in adobe audition production techniques
Knowledge of industry-standard loudness targets for podcast/broadcast content
Effective time management and ability to work quickly under tight deadlines
Meticulous attention to detail
5 years of work experience mixing audio for broadcast and the web
Experience/education
Bachelor’s degree in media, radio/television, communications, audio/video production, sound design, or other related field.
Preferred qualification or special skills
Ear for non-linear, narrative, digital editing, including pacing and scoring dialog with music
Experience with 3rd party plug-ins for eq, compression, noise reduction, and mastering
Experience producing/post-producing a radio program or podcast
Background in sound design; musical background a plus
Ability to travel internationally, u.sPassport
