Description
Saic is seeking a principal engineer – high energy density batteries for our crane, in office, in support of us navy and other dod service branchesThe person in this position will become an engineering lead for saic supporting the military application of low and high voltage systems, including associated system engineering and safety requirementThe preferred candidate will have a deep understanding of the electrochemistry, design, construction, performance, and safety hazards of high energy density cells and batteries, and a broad understanding of the systems engineering efforts (e.gElectrical engineering, mechanical engineering, thermal engineering, software engineering) necessary to integrate such batteries into military or commercial systems.
Note: this role requires daily interaction with our nswc-crane navy customer, and therefore the preferred candidate will be one that joins us at our offices in crane, inSpecial candidates with sufficient battery and military customer experience may be able to work remotely and travel periodically to nswc/crane in a hybrid role.
Responsibilities include:
Energy and power source systems engineering – advise the government during all phases of the systems engineering cycle from concept development, to engineering design, qualification testing, production, and field integration and support
Concept development – perform trades studies and develop conop’s for the optimization and implementation of high energy batteries into military systems
Engineering design – assist the government customers and their suppliers and contractors in defining, allocating, and validating battery subsystem requirements and in designing battery hardware and software to meet those requirementsParticipate in design reviews and provide design oversight as the government’s sme
System qualification testing – performance testing and safety/hazard characterization testing; write test plans, test procedures, and test reports; execute and/or oversee tests on site at nswc/crane or at vendor facilities
Systems integration testing – perform field integration and operational checkout through ioc; perform and/or oversee periodic field maintenance
Perform safety assessments, hazard analyses, failure probability analyses, reliability analyses, and risk assessments
Qualifications
Required education and experience
Ability to obtain a secret clearance
Bachelors and eighteen (18) years or more experience; masters and sixteen (16) years or more experience; phd and fifteen (15) years or more experience.
Understanding of the range of battery chemistries (and also other energy storage devices such as fuel cells).
Desired qualifications and skills
Experience with navy manned and unmanned underwater systems
Energy storage and power systems
Military (navy, marine corps) and nasa vehicles
Low voltage (24 vdc) to high voltage (300-400 vdc) systems
Small (< 2 kwh) to large (> 1000 kwh) systems
Specify and integrate associated power conversion systems
Working knowledge of military and nasa design requirements and safety requirements (e.gS9310-aq-saf-010, sg270-bv-saf-010, jsc-20793b, nasa/tm-2009-215751 /nesc-rp-08-75/06-069-i)
Working knowledge of industry standards for design and safety (e.gUl, iec, iata)
Systems requirements specifications (and decompose into derived requirements and subsystem specs)
Safety assessments (hazard analyses, fmea’s, fault tree analyses, root cause failure analyses)
