Terms of reference consultancy: graphic designer, reader guides to accompany children’s books june - july 2022 room to read seeks a qualified consultant to design and layout a series of reader guides for caregivers and educators in the united states on how to engage children through story-time and content specific reading activitiesThe graphic designer will work alongside the content developers to produce reader guides in formats that are accessible across languages and literacy levelsThe period of performance for the consultancy will be from june through july 2022Background: while the u.sIs one of the wealthiest countries in the world, neither wealth nor learning opportunity is equitably distributedThe educational overview of the u.sMakes clear that segments of the population are underserved by the educational system, including children from black, latinx, native american and white american communities where high levels of poverty and rural environments create extreme barriers to learningChildren in foster care homes as well as children from immigrant and refugee populations also face increased vulnerabilitiesOur vision is that children living and going to school in high-need communities in the united states will have access to books where they see characters like themselves, their family, and their race, ethnicity, abilities, and culture being valued in the world, furthering their literacy developmentWe also want children to learn to understand and value the stories of others, stories that provide both characters to whom children can relate and settings in which they see themselves, as well as role models to emulate and goals to strive for including careers in science, math, engineering, and technologyParents, caregivers, and teachers will use these books to help foster a habit of reading in their communities, and with guidance on how to use the books with children at home and in the classroom, explore the stories of diverse characters that lack representationRoom to read aims to continue encouraging innovative models of publishing and encouraging the work of diverse children’s authors to challenge established models of creation, distribution, and representation in children’s booksScope of work: the graphic designer will work alongside rtr staff and consultants to design the format, layout, and graphics for a series of up to (14) two- to four-page reader guides with the following objective: design reader guides on standard 8.5 x 11 paper, printable at home, such that they are accessible for caregivers and educators across language and literacy levels in the united states deliverables: this consultant will work with room to read staff and two other room to read consultants to develop final reader guides that are well designed and accessible for caregivers and educators in the united statesThe following deliverables are required at the conclusion of the constancyThe consultant is expected to maintain regular meetings with the project staff to provide progress updatesDesign and deliver (10) content reader guides for each title in rtr’s peace and equality collectionRtr should receive final packaged design filesJuly 14th, 2022 designer will work with rtr staff and rtr’s consultant, ceeds of peace, to design the reader guides in formats that are best suited for educators and caregivers that receive rtr’s peace and equality collection design and deliver up to (4) foundational reader guides to support caregivers in engaging children in read-aloud activitiesRtr should receive final packaged design filesJuly 31, 2022 designer will work with rtrs foundational reader guide consultant to design reader guides in formats based on community feedbackQualifications: required:
Graphic design expertise and experience; portfolio available
Demonstrated experience designing educational content for educators and caregivers
Experience designing in adobe indesign & creative suite
A commitment to education equity in the u.s.
