Northrop grumman`s space sector, payload and ground division is seeking a senior principal materials & process engineer for the design engineering team in commerce californiaWe design and manufacture high performance pressure vessels for use in space applicationsThe northrop grumman commerce facility is the leading supplier of pressure vessels for space missions in the worldAt the facility we produce a wide variety of pressure vessels supporting a wide variety of missions, both foreign and domestic, commercial, defense, and civil spaceThis position is part of the design engineering team and supports the manufacturing team at the siteThis position reports to a senior manager of engineering.
Role and responsibilities:
Directly support chief engineer and engineering manager in achieving design, quality, and cost objectives
Provide technical expertise in the materials and process discipline related to machined, welded, and heat treated piece parts and assemblies
Support chief engineer in material characterization tests of various materials (metallics, composites, elastomers, etc) used in the design of high performance pressure vessels
Develop, maintain, and revise internal materials and process specifications standards in accordance with internal configuration management standards
Document lessons learned and implement into current and new process specification standards
Review and monitoring of revisions of industry standards and determine applicability to internal process standards
Monitor and report on gidep alerts applicable to tank designs
Interact with design and development teams (teams include specialists in design, quality, manufacturing) to investigate and trouble shoot material performance and behavior trends
Contribute to failure review board (frb) activities to ensure material discrepancies and anomalies are thoroughly documented, reviewed, analyzed and dispositioned
Support development of fight hardware from preliminary through detailed design, drawing release, manufacturing, integration, and verification testing
Support internal and external process audits in accordance with as9100 standards
Support irad projects and development programs
Prepare and make presentations summarizing technical content for internal review boards and external customer review boards
Prepare and release test procedures for material development, component troubleshooting, and other material performance assessment activities
Support continuous improvement activities
Basic qualifications:
Bachelor`s degree in materials engineering, chemical engineering or related engineering/scientific discipline and seven (7) years of materials related experience
Expertise in one of the following core competency areas: heat treating, machining, welding of metallics
Expertise in metallic material performance and characteristics
Understanding of aerospace industry standards and specifications and application to space flight components and drawings
Us citizenship required
Preferred qualifications:
Ms in materials or chemical engineering
10+ years’ experience in an aerospace manufacturing facility
Experience with forging, machining, heat treating and welding of titanium and titanium alloys
Experience with compression molding processes and elastomers
Experience with high performance carbon composite resin systems
Experience with additive manufacturing of metallic materials
Experience in supporting process audits
Experienced with ms office suite (word, excel, powerpoint)
Excellent oral and written communication, computer, documentation, and presentation skills are required
Ability to multi-task
Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
Salary range: $114,300 usd - $171,500 usd
