Who we want: we want an underwriter team lead assists the regional underwriting manager and underwriting manager in leading a team of 5-12 underwritersThe underwriter team lead is responsible for the timely and accurate evaluation and approval/denial of loan applications in accordance with investor guidelinesThis position underwrites large or more difficult/complex loans ensuring compliance with appropriate hfg and secondary market investor standardsThe team lead mentors, coaches, and provides direction to underwriters, production staff, and operationsThe position has the authority to second level and decline loans as well as develop and recommend modifications to underwriting and production procedures.
Assists team with loan level questions, escalations, and 2nd level reviews
Assists with resubs and managing team queues including coverage for underwriters on pto
Utilizes knowledge and experience to serve as an advisor for junior members of the department
Proactively suggests program alternatives for clients who do not qualify for terms initially submitted
Demonstrates sound judgment in the analysis of required documentation with mitigating organization risk through appropriate decision-making
Meets or exceeds credit quality standards set forth by hfg, while responding timely to quality control and audit reviews when requested
Assists underwriting manager, when necessary, helps with training
Acts as a resource for operations and sales colleagues regarding specific product requirements for loans in process
Coaches processors, lmps, underwriters, and jrUnderwriters when appropriate and works with them to find solutions to problems when possible; may work to resolve escalations from sales and/or management
Communicates effectively and engages proactively with lmps, processors, branch managers, closer/funders and post-closers regarding loan decisions, assignment of loan conditions, investor guidelines/documentation requirements and possible loan scenarios
Assesses the risk of a loan and makes an approval or decline decision based on the quality of the data in the loan file
Analyzes and verifies the employment profile, credit strength, property characteristics, and all other information pertinent to the credit decision process on each loan application
Ensures an investment quality loan product, creditworthiness of the borrowers, and acceptability of the collateral
Applies all internal underwriting guidelines, investor requirements, and federal regulations to the decision process to ensure loan quality
Participates in hfg internal meetings and required trainings
Maintains a professional image and demonstrates an understanding of and follows all hfg policies and procedures

High school diploma or equivalent required
Minimum 7 years of underwriting experience required
Fha direct endorsement underwriter designation required, and sar preferred
Management or team leadership experience preferred
Appraisal review experience required
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial data
Excellent documentation, organization, and analytical skills required
Proficient pc skills to include excel, word, and microsoft outlook
Experience with desktop underwriter (du) / encompass/ gus/ lp/ and other major origination/underwriting systems preferred
Working knowledge of mortgage origination process, fnma, fha, va, rd, jumbo and safe act guidelines
Must be able to demonstrate established competency levels for all required regulatory or compliance-related processes and/or procedures within established timeframes of appointments
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong customer service skills to internal and external customers
Ability to develop positive relationships
Exceptional organization and time management skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
