Grownyc is a 51-year-old environmental nonprofit organization - helping more than 3 million new yorkers by providing essential services and taking action to make nyc a livable city, one where every person can enjoy a healthier, more sustainable life.
Our network of greenmarkets, farmstands, fresh food box sites, and greenmarket coEnsures that all new yorkers have access to the freshest, healthiest local food.
We blanket the five boroughs with resources like textile and food scrap collection, stop`n`swaps, as well as free training to make waste reduction easy for all.
We build and support community school gardens through volunteer days, technical assistance, training, grants, and more.
We provide 70,000 children each year with programs that provide meaningful interactions with the natural environment.

About grownyc’s school gardens
Grownyc school gardens was established in 2010 to promote the creation of a sustainable learning garden at all doe public and charter k-12 schools citywideOur annual offering of 40+ workshops, giveaways, technical assistance, and mini-grants have helped over 860 schools start gardens.
Grownyc was awarded a usda farm to school grant to develop and pilot a teen farmstand business curriculum to provide educational opportunities for students to explore and develop the skills needed for agricultural careersBased on grownyc’s 51 years of launching farmstands and markets in all five boroughs, the curriculum will focus on marketing, business planning, community engagement, etcThe curriculum will complement efforts to scale up garden initiatives at two pilot schools should they wish to launch a physical farmstand at the program’s completionFollowing the grant period and the pilot phase, the finalized curriculum will be made publicly available for any nyc high school.
The youth curriculum advisor will join our team from october of 2021 – june of 2022 to develop the farmstand business curriculum for high school students and revise as needed based on student and teacher feedbackThis position will collaborate with grownyc’s school gardens’ team and greenmarket youth education programs to:
Youth curriculum advisor responsibilities:
Collaborate with our education team to develop a new farmstand business curriculum for high school students, centered around urban agriculture and business skills, using some pre-existing content
Create teaching materials to prepare selected teachers to utilize the farmstand business curriculum program in their schools during the spring of 2022.
Deliver teacher training workshops virtually for each of the schools in the early spring.
Create follow up evaluation materials to participating teachers to fulfill grant requirements.
Support grownyc program staff as the curriculum is implemented and revised as needed.
Teaching experience with high school students in an urban setting is a must.
Knowledge of and familiarity with the nyc doe public k-12 school system.
Experience and expertise developing standards aligned, hands on curriculum
Understanding of urban agriculture as a pathway to green jobs
Knowledge of anything in the following areas is a plus: community advocacy, food justice, entrepreneurship, northeast or new york state food systems, local and regional food systems.
This position has been funded by the usda farm’s to school program, which completes june 30, 2022.
The youth curriculum advisor position is part-time, +/- 9 hours per week from november 2021 – june 2022Work hours per week can be flexed, with more hours used during october – december, during the most active content creation periodThe hours/weekday schedule can be flexible but must fall between monday-fridayWork can be done remotely.
The position pays $29.50 per hour and includes only statutory benefits.
