Overview
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced field instrumentation and controls (i&c) engineer to join the power plant test and operations engineering teamThis position will provide on-site technical support for a fleet of fuel cell power generation, biogas fuel, hydrogen generation and carbon capture facilitiesThe role is focused on continual improvement of electrical and mechanical balance of plant equipment reliabilityReview of performance data, on-site electrical and mechanical inspection and installation, engineering design and interdisciplinary coordination are core functions of the roleFleet optimization responsibilities will include identification of issues responsible for sub-optimal performance, root cause analyses and solution development for existing fleetIn addition to the support of an existing fleet of facilities, the role will assist in development of next generation facilities for decarbonizing energy and producing hydrogen.
Responsibilities:
You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the installation, start-up commissioning, operation and service of advanced fuel cell-based systems for power generation, hydrogen production, and carbon capture applicationsThese systems include the core fuel cell modules, mechanical balance of plant, electrical balance of plant, heat recovery, and biogas cleanup systemsThe field i&c engineer will be responsible for local and remote operational support, process control, control philosophy, alarm response & with a focus on commissioning start-up activitiesThis position requires flexibility to work on multiple projects, covering a range of systems and technologies, in various stages of the design or validation processThe position required on-call support on a rotating basis.
Work with multi-disciplinary engineering group; with responsibility for, evaluating, supporting and recommending design improvements for our proprietary equipment for power generation, conversion, and storage.
Work requires experience interfacing with operations in various host facility environments such as wastewater treatment plants, healthcare facilities, educational facilities, power plants, manufacturing plants, etc.
Develops plc/hmi software for new and existing control system.
Selects suitable instrumentations and field actuators using reliability tools and considering operational variation.
Selects suitable controls system components.
Validates new and modified controls plc/hmi software.
Test new and modified fuel cell controls subsystems and integrated control system to validate their suitability.
Performs i/o loop checks on new controls systems and retrofitted existing control systems.
Develops new and modifies existing controls logic to meet functionalities described in control philosophy.
Improves existing control systems using engineering change and configuration control processes
Prepares and maintains engineering design documentation.
Interfaces with equipment vendors to monitor fabrication and delivery process so as to ensure delivery of high-quality equipment in accordance with the project requirementsThis includes periodically visiting vendor’s production facilities to inspect product workmanship and witness equipment performance or other acceptance tests.
Supports troubleshooting and resolution of i&c-related field issues including performing root cause analysis, onsite support of troubleshooting and resolution.
Create specifications and drawings (schematics, loop sheets, panel drawings, etc) for plc and relay logic control systems used in fuel cell control systems.
Ensures that systems are developed in accordance with best safety practicesThis includes participating in hazard and operability analysis (hazop) reviews.
Design and coordinate test procedures for improved reliability of fuel cell power plants.
Works with suppliers to and contractors to develop and troubleshoot improvement s to suresource power plants.
Prepares technical reports and presentations to communicate designs/results to internal and external stakeholdersAssists with writing project proposals.
Works with engineering team to implement field derived design changes into standardized design process.
Works with advanced technology team to incorporate lessons learned from field into next generation design parameters
Performs other duties and projects, as assigned.
Domestic travel required up to 20% Some international travel may be necessary.
Qualifications:
Education & experience: b.s degree in chemical, electrical or related engineering discipline and 5 years’ relevant experience; or 10 years relevant technical & engineering experienceExperience in instrumentation and controls diagnosis and troubleshooting required.
Required experience and characteristics:
Experience in the engineering level design and control of power systems.
Experience working with and trouble-shooting instrumentation and controls systems in the field.
Experience in power plants, process plants, central plants and similar facilitiesExperience: minimum 3 years plc and hmi programming experience.
Experience applying instrumentation and controls engineering principles to design integrated systems.
Demonstrated testing, validation, product launch, support, and continuous improvement experience.
Electrical drawings and documentation (e.gSingle line, three line, wiring & interconnect drawings).
Familiar with instrument layout & details, logic diagrams, instrument loop diagrams.
Experience working with programmable logic controllers, analog and digital input hardware.
Experience with root cause analysis, containment and corrective action development.
Ladder logic and function block programming.
Possesses understanding of instrumentation and actuators, the speed of actuators and their effect on process system performance; and devising controls software to facilitate system performance requirement.
Must be able to program and configure these devices
Engineering level troubleshooting skills with power, electrical and mechanical systems
Must be able to communicate on a technical level with electrical, instrumentation & control, mechanical and process engineers and organize immediate and long term troubleshooting with these disciplines.
Hazard and operability study (hazop) experience is a plus
Proficient in the use of microsoft office suite
Excellent oral and written communication skills to work effectively and openly with others, both internally and externally
Good presentation skills to effectively communicate ideas and scientific findings
Team player who works willingly with others and keeps a positive, goal-focused outlook when tackling challenging, time-sensitive engineering problems
Flexible and adaptable to rapidly shift gears into multi-disciplinary roles based on current project requirements
Ability to obtain/maintain a valid passport and travel internationally without restriction is required.
Working environment/working conditions:
On-site technical support at an operating hydrogen, power and heat generating facility
Remote desk work using a computer
Remote on-call support is required on a rotating schedule.
Be able and willing to wear required personal protective equipment (ppe) as designated such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hard hats, respirator, and other ppe as required.
Travel: up to 30-50% domestic and internationalTravel via car and/or commercial airlines.
