The Senior Director of Data Solutions & Engineering is a highly experienced and visionary leader who will be responsible for creating a comprehensive data strategy at Flipp. This individual will possess an exceptional track record of driving data, engineering, and artificial intelligence initiatives and will be able to lead the organization forward in a data-driven manner. Collaborating closely with product, engineering, and other stakeholders, the Senior Director will leverage their extensive expertise in managing data and engineering at scale, as well as their deep understanding of data engineering, analytics, machine learning, and other AI technologies.
As the most senior data leader, the Senior Director thrives in building top-tier teams, prioritizing team health, and placing them in the best position to succeed. This individual will own product delivery, productivity improvement, and collaboration on cross-functional goals. Furthermore, Senior Directors will frequently receive ambiguous, undefined problems with the implicit aim of creating clarity and driving execution/direction.
Mentoring and managing senior leaders in the organization will also be a crucial responsibility of the Senior Director, with Senior Managers, Staff Engineers, and Directors reporting to them. We seek a dynamic and innovative Senior Director who can successfully build and implement data, engineering, and AI initiatives that will positively impact Flipp's business.
Vision & Strategy Execution
- Define and communicate a compelling vision for Data, AI, and Engineering at Flipp that aligns with the company's long-term goals
- Develop and execute a comprehensive Data & Engineering strategy that supports the vision and drives innovation
- Demonstrate exceptional problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of complex concepts, enabling you to create mental models and frameworks for execution excellence
- Lead the annual planning process for strategic initiatives and programs for Data & Engineering, ensuring they are aligned with business priorities and objectives
- Identify and implement new technologies, tools, and methodologies that enhance our data capabilities, enabling us to deliver high-quality, scalable, and performant products
- Ensure that our products meet or exceed industry standards for quality, scalability, and performance, while also providing a seamless user experience
- Develop and maintain data processes and procedures that foster an agile, collaborative, and efficient development culture, enabling us to deliver products quickly and effectively
People & Team Leadership
- Attract and retain top data talent by creating a compelling employer brand, a positive candidate experience, and a strong focus on leadership development
- Partner effectively with the People division to build inclusive teams that reflect our values and enable diverse perspectives
- Establish a robust data leadership development program that enables the growth of the next generation of data practitioners and leaders
- Hold a high bar for performance management, setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback, and ensuring accountability for results
- Develop a strong culture of feedback that supports the ongoing growth and development of our talent, enabling them to reach their full potential
- Foster effective mentorship across all levels of data, enabling knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and cross-functional learning opportunities.
Collaboration & Partnerships
- Build and maintain high-trust relationships with key stakeholders across the business, including Engineering, Product, and XPT teams
- Leverage your exceptional relationship-building skills to drive cross-functional collaboration and build consensus around key data initiatives and priorities
- Drive cross-functional alignment for data priority areas, ensuring that our investments align with the broader business strategy and goals
- Foster a culture of collaboration and partnership within the data organization, enabling teams to work effectively together and with other functions to achieve shared objectives.
Data Practice Excellence
- Develop and maintain a world-class data practice across the organization, ensuring that we have the right people, processes, and technologies in place to drive success
- Work closely with cross-functional partners to identify key data needs and priorities, and develop strategies for meeting those needs in a scalable and sustainable way
- Drive the adoption of data-driven decision-making throughout the organization, ensuring that teams have the training, resources, and support they need to leverage data effectively
- Foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation, encouraging experimentation and exploration of new data technologies and approaches
- Stay up-to-date on emerging data and AI trends, and provide thought leadership on the potential impact of these trends on our business and industry
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Engineering, or related field
Experience
- 12+ years of Software Development experience
- 10+ years of Software Development management experience (Manager and Director levels)
- 8+ years of experience in Data Engineering or Machine Learning
Qualifications, Certifications or Designations
- Advanced skills in leading multiple teams with total team size of 70+
- Advanced skills in setting, communicating, implementing, and achieving objectives and goals through the direct management of teams in multiple levels
- Advanced org planning, management, and change management skills across cross-functional groups and departments
- Ability to facilitate discussions and drive clarity for teams.
