Doctoral adult & juvenile justice research assistant
Remote-friendly (offices in madison, wi & oakland, ca)

Who should apply?
Evident change (formerly the national council on crime and delinquency) is looking to partner with a part-time doctoral research assistant (actively pursuing a doctorate in social sciences)The assistant will work with our research team to conduct an equity-anchored evaluation and targeted enhancement of evident change’s correctional assessment and intervention system™ (cais) and juvenile assessment and intervention system™ (jais)Cais™ and jais™ are multidimensional assessment and supervision systems that include actuarial risk assessment and comprehensive assessment of needsThese assessments are provided within the context of a clinical evaluation of what drives an individual’s behaviors, along with recommended supervision strategies proven effective in both community and institutional settingsThe purpose of the systems is to assist caseworkers with developing effective client-centered case plans focused on identified needsThis evaluation will enhance both cais and jais and inform continuous quality improvement in their implementation across the united states.
The ideal candidate has a background in criminology, ethnic studies, legal studies, political science, psychology, public health, public policy, social work, sociology, or a related fieldPeople with lived experience in the child welfare or justice system are strongly encouraged to apply.
The assistantship is remote at this time and requires some availability during central time business hoursThe assistant is expected to work about three to five hours per weekThis position has the opportunity to last for up to one year.
What does a typical workweek look like?
The assistant will gain valuable skills by working with our experienced, supportive staff and participate in adult and juvenile justice research, policy, and practice work that affects communitiesThe assistant will gain experience in examining system-level impacts on communities, families, and children affected by adult and juvenile justice systems through an intersectional lens, considering how identities shape experiences.
Tasks will include working with evident change staff on developing and implementing evaluation and research designs, performing quantitative and/or qualitative coding and analysis, researching and drafting literature reviews, and writing reportsThis position may include an independent research project related to evident change’s work, mission, and goals.
What qualifications do you need?

Active engagement in an accredited social sciences doctoral program or demonstrated course completion pending dissertation defense;
Demonstrated interest in adult and/or juvenile justice research or policy;
Demonstrated commitment to social justice, racial equity, and promotion of equitable practices;
Demonstrated experience completing research, policy analysis, or other relevant work independently;
Being detail oriented; organized; and able to work independently, problem solve, and take initiative;
Proficiency in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods and analysis;
Proficiency in statistics and/or database software packages (r, spss);
Ability to collaborate effectively across projects and content areas; and
Direct experience within the adult or juvenile justice system and/or working with individuals, children, and families with justice system involvement.
