Director of science and technology Center for contemporary sciences
Terms of employment: full time, at-will, exempt
Reports to: chief executive officer (ceo)
Position location: rockville, md or remote
The center for contemporary sciences (ccs) is at the forefront of the movement to replace animal research and testing with human biology-based methods to benefit human health and animal welfareThe ccs’s director of science and technology will have an outsized role in catalyzing a paradigm shift in biomedical research focused on using human-relevant research and testing methods.
How you will make a difference
As ccs’s director of science and technology you will provide strategic guidance to ccs’s executive staff and board of directors to implement programs that will have a measurable impact on replacing the use of animals in biomedical research with more effective human-based testing methods.
You will do this by:
Managing all aspects of the science and technology department, including supervising staff, guiding department budgeting and spending, creating and implementing expansion plans, providing visionary leadership, and supporting the ceo; Seeking and applying for grants for scientific programs; Developing models for assessing and forecasting current trends, trajectories, and challenges within the human-based biology research and testing methods; Translating the insights and findings from internal and external analyses into public-facing resources such as white papers, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed articles, as well as distilling them into actionable recommendations for resource allocation and further research; Engaging with researchers, companies, governmental agencies, and other organizations to develop alliances and partnershipsDeveloping and implementing strategic plans and working to fill research, infrastructure, and technology gaps; Creating engaging workshops and speaking at scientific conferences Supporting academic institutions in implementing programs, educational tracks, and centers focused on human-based testing methods; Building ccs’s capacity to serve as a knowledge hub and a connector and bridge builder in the field; Developing (in concert with ccs’s ceo, and with ccs’s board of directors, where appropriate), ccs’s overall science direction and strategies, along with overseeing the implementation of those strategies; Performing any other duties as assigned.
Md or ph.d in the biomedical/medical sciences; Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the u.s.; At least five years of post-graduate professional experience; At least three years of experience in building and leading teams; A proven track record of analyzing scientific literature and publishing scientific papers; Experience translating scientific information into formats for nonscientific professionals; Strong work ethic and ability to see projects through to completion; Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; Enthusiasm for the mission of ccs; Self-motivated with an ability to work independently and within a larger group; Comfort working remotely and in a rapidly growing and evolving organization. Experience working with governmental agencies, private industry, and/or academic institutions.
