About this Role

This position has the option of working remotely, or joining us in an office in NYC or SF if you prefer.

Dwell is an established, respected 20 year old profitable company investing in the future of digital, interactive media and online community building.

This role is a critical member of the team who will have an outsized impact on our current and future digital products and services.

As a Principal Frontend Engineer, you will be an empathetic, articulate and creative member of a small-but-mighty cross-functional product team. We build new products and services on top of Dwell's existing subscription platform, which already has a rapidly growing base of hundreds of thousands of paying subscribers and a reach of 40M people annually.

As part of the core engineering team, the ideal candidate will have a specialist’s knowledge of web-based, front end development. Along with a deep and thorough technical acumen, the candidate should have an equally strong ability to lift up team members and work strongly with others while striving to reach the team’s goals.

Responsibilities

• Be proactive in writing clean, fast, well-designed, well-tested, readable, and maintainable code
• Work with teams across the organization, including product, design, legal, and business development to think beyond the technical implications of your design decisions
• Lead projects from idea to positive execution
• Actively mentor other engineers by leading and collaborating in all engineering discussions, evangelizing engineering best practices
• Continuously push to raise the team’s, and organization’s, standard of engineering excellence by implementing, or enhancing, best practices for coding, testing, and the developer experience
• Own, create, or review technical design proposals and proofs of concept

Skills & Qualifications

• 7+ years of software development experience
• Passionate about code quality, continuous delivery, and automated testing
• Comfortable challenging yourself, and your team, to improve ways of working
• Substantial experience in technical leadership over responsive single-page web applications in high-scale and high-reliability cloud deployments
• Demonstrated experience with React, Redux, SCSS, Mocha, Webpack, ES6+
• Enthusiasm for software architecture across the front-end, (ideally) back-end, and the APIs that bind them
• Detail-oriented, critical thinker, self-motivated, enthusiastic, resourceful, personable, customer-focused, and interested in mentorship and well being of other team members
• Ability to convey complex technical information to a variety of levels within the organization

Nice to Have

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related quantitative degree
• Node, TypeScript experience
• Experience building APIs
