As a Principal Data Architect at Upwork, you will work at the intersection of Product, Analytics, Engineering and Business Teams to define information architecture and data standards with a focus on analytics cases. We partner with outstanding global talent, many sourced from the Upwork marketplace!
Your Responsibilities:-
Build the high level data architecture and integrated reporting data model design for data analytics at Upwork. Translate business needs into long-term data architecture solutions that are consistent with business strategies.

Build and publish data architecture strategies, standards, and guidelines for the Data Analytics and Solutions team. Collaborate with source system owners on standards for structured and semistructured data tracking in their systems to meet data analytics needs in the data lake.

Communicate, educate and ensure alignment to data design standards across data-related projects. Review information architecture work throughout the Product Development Life Cycle process to ensure quality and alignment to standards. Review and sign-off on project data models.

Analyze business processes, operational applications and source data to understand dependencies, anomalies and implicit business rules that impact the ability to handle master data. Design, develop and maintain logical and physical data models. Perform data profiling and analysis. Work with the data engineers to develop data models that ensure the reporting data layer meets analytics needs. Ensure tracking data is linked to other customer and product data where possible.

Participate in data governance reviews of key business metrics and definitions and ensure approved business logic is implemented in reporting data models. Build data privacy and security requirements into data architecture solutions.

Establish measures to chart progress related to completeness and quality of data and meta-data for enterprise information, to support reduction of data redundancy and fragmentation, elimination of unnecessary movement of data, and improvement of data quality.

Hands-on experience building data architecture solutions for a marketplace business model as well as key functional domains (e.g. Marketing, Finance, User Behavior Analytics, Customer 360, Trust and Safety, Customer Support) in a mid to large size company.

Experience integrating data from disparate data sources (internal business systems, third party vendors, mobile applications, product website, etc.)

Solid grasp of database storage concepts for large and sophisticated data sets (data lake, relational databases, NoSQL, Graph, data warehousing).

Experience in Data Governance, Master Data Management, Data Quality, Data Privacy and Data Lineage.

Experience with Big Data technologies such as Snowflake, Presto, Elastic Search, Snowplow…; as well as self service tools such as business intelligence (Looker), data visualization, data discovery, metadata management, etc.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to engage different partners within the business and technology teams.
