Role:
As a Staff Data Scientist, you are embedded on a Product team, working with product managers, engineers, data analysts, and business teams, and using your curiosity, creativity, and statistical skills to find valuable insights about our marketplace, our systems, and our users.You use techniques such as statistical modeling, machine learning, natural language processing, and data visualization to explore data, test hypotheses, identify underlying causes and patterns, and find the best ways to turn these insights into better decisions and product improvements. You actively support the success of other Data Scientists, ensuring that the team’s projects and processes are focused, on track, and high quality and that partnerships with other teams are effective and coordinated. You actively work to advance the role of data science within our products and business, and advance the capabilities of the data science team.
Responsibilities:
- Provides technical support for data science projects owned by the team, as well as mentorship and guidance to the members of the team, and provides technical leadership within at least one area of expertise
- Understands latest developments in data science, and can apply them to the team’s work when appropriate. Enrich the team through sharing recent advances in data science research.
- Drives company-wide impact and informs strategic decision-making by generating and testing hypotheses, surfacing insights, and building models.
- Collaborates with stakeholder teams on projects, asking clear questions to gain understanding of their challenges and decisions, and proposing impactful research plans.
- Partners with other research and analysis teams at TpT to extend our culture and practice of learning, institutional knowledge, and domain expertise.
- Delivers compelling reports, presentations and materials on the results of research that can be easily understood by non-technical audiences.
- Analyzes data quality issues, identifying root causes and remedies.
- Helps to recruit new team members by conducting interviews that assess a candidates’ technical ability and demonstration of our values.
Qualities of a successful candidate:
- A track record of value-creation in previous organizations, using data science techniques to model and explain user behavior
- Advanced knowledge of SQL and Python for data science, including reproducible research tools and processes, data exploration and visualization, and statistical modeling.
- A deep understanding of statistical methods and practices, including experimentation, advanced regression and probabilistic modeling.
- Able to choose machine learning models, train and tune them with good practices, extract insights, and suggest opportunities to productionize them.
- Outstanding communications skills, including the ability to speak clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences, present insights to groups, and to write clear, concise research results and summaries.
- Able to keep complex projects on track and focused on value-creation.
- 5+ years of industry experience on an insights-focused data science team.
Extra Credit For:
- Experience with Ed-Tech or e-commerce marketplaces
- Experience with Search and Recommendations systems
- Open source contributor or active in your professional community
